Why this technology matters.
Technology architecture is the discipline of designing the whole technology landscape — applications, data, infrastructure, and platforms — around shared standards. It matters now because disconnected tools and one-off decisions pile into expensive, fragile estates.
You will use it wherever organizations set reference architectures, choose platforms and cloud services, and draw integration and platform boundaries. It brings long-term fitness and reuse, but it does not fix poor delivery habits, missing product focus, or bad data on its own.
By the end you will be able to build an enterprise reference architecture, a platform evaluation with migration options, and a governance model with standards and review routines.
Why this course exists
Toy demos draw one clean diagram; production architecture must govern platforms, integrations, and exceptions across many teams over time. This course follows the arc from landscape mapping to platform evaluation to integration design to standards and governance.

Technology landscape migration and governance plan
Speak the language first.
- Reference Architecture
- A standard blueprint showing how applications, data, and infrastructure should fit together so new systems follow a consistent pattern.
- Platform Evaluation
- Comparing frameworks, services, and vendors on fitness, cost, and longevity before committing the organization to a choice.
- Integration Landscape
- A map of how systems connect through APIs, events, and shared services, showing boundaries and points of reuse.
- Shared Services
- Common capabilities like identity or logging offered once centrally so product teams do not rebuild them separately.
- Architecture Governance
- The reviews, standards, and exception processes that keep technology decisions consistent across many teams.
- Architecture Review Board
- A cross-team forum that reviews major designs for risk, alignment, and reuse before they are approved to build.
- Migration Planning
- Sequencing the move from current systems to a target landscape in phases that limit risk and downtime.
- Technology Standards
- Approved choices for languages, platforms, and patterns that reduce duplication and simplify support.
- Platform Boundaries
- Clear lines showing what a platform provides versus what product teams own, preventing overlap and gaps.
Fix, check, and go deeper.
Troubleshooting & common mistakes
Shadow platforms duplicating the same capability
Inventory overlapping tools and their costs, then designate one shared service, publish its boundary, and route new requests through it.
Review board seen as a rubber stamp or blocker
Check whether reviews happen too late or lack criteria, then move reviews earlier, publish a checklist, and record decisions with rationale.
Migration stalling halfway across systems
Map remaining dependencies and owners, then re-sequence the plan into smaller phases with rollback steps and a named owner per phase.
Standards ignored by delivery teams
Find whether the standard is unclear or hard to adopt, then simplify the guidance, provide reference examples, and handle exceptions through a written request process.
Integration sprawl with fragile point-to-point links
Diagram current connections to spot duplication, then consolidate around shared integration patterns and retire one-off links per release.
Before you move on, you should be able to
- Architect enterprise reference architectures across applications, data, and infrastructure
- Evaluate platforms, frameworks, and cloud services for long-term fitness
- Design integration landscapes with clear shared services and boundaries
- Build migration plans that sequence moves with limited risk
- Govern architecture standards through reviews and exception processes
- Explain platform choices and tradeoffs to technical and business partners
- Design governance models that balance consistency with delivery speed
