Why this technology matters.
Solution architecture turns a business requirement into a secure, workable, costed design a team can deliver and operate. It matters now because projects fail in the gaps between requirements, integrations, and non-functional needs.
You will use it wherever teams design end-to-end solutions across APIs, events, files, and third-party systems, weighing performance, security, and availability. It solves vague designs and hidden tradeoffs, but it does not fix unclear business goals, missing funding, or weak delivery execution.
By the end you will be able to build an end-to-end solution design with estimates, an integration blueprint across systems, and an architecture decision record capturing options and tradeoffs.
Why this course exists
Toy demos sketch boxes and arrows; production designs must be secure, costed, integrated, and operable with documented rationale. This course follows the arc from discovery to solution design to integration planning to decision records and delivery estimates.

Costed solution architecture with delivery estimates
Speak the language first.
- End-to-End Solution Design
- A complete blueprint from discovery through deployment and operations showing components, flows, and responsibilities.
- Architecture Decision Records
- Short written records capturing one decision, the options considered, and why the chosen path won, so future teams understand the reasoning.
- Integration Patterns
- Reusable ways for systems to connect, such as synchronous APIs, asynchronous events, file transfers, or third-party connectors.
- Non-Functional Requirements
- Constraints on performance, security, availability, and scale that a solution must meet alongside its features.
- Delivery Estimation
- Sizing effort, sequencing, and cost for a solution design so business sponsors can plan budgets and timelines.
- Security by Design
- Building authentication, authorization, and data protection into the solution from the start rather than adding them later.
- Availability Design
- Planning redundancy, failover, and recovery so a solution keeps running through failures at its required level.
- Costed Solution Options
- Comparing two or more design options with rough costs and tradeoffs so stakeholders can choose with full context.
Fix, check, and go deeper.
Troubleshooting & common mistakes
Design rejected late for missing security needs
Check non-functional requirements for gaps, then add identity, data protection, and audit needs to the design and re-review before costing.
Integration failing under real data volumes
Profile payload sizes and rates against the chosen pattern, then switch heavy flows to events or batches and retest at expected load.
Estimates far below actual delivery cost
Compare the estimate against operations and integration effort left out, then re-cost with run, support, and third-party fees included.
Decisions revisited because rationale was lost
Confirm no written record exists, then write a decision record per open choice with options, tradeoffs, and the agreed outcome.
Solution missing operational ownership
Trace each component to its run-and-support owner, then assign on-call, monitoring, and handover steps before deployment sign-off.
