Why this technology matters.
Infrastructure engineering is the foundation under everything else: computers, networks, storage, and Linux servers configured, hardened, and kept healthy so applications have something solid to run on. You learn to provision machines and containers, set baselines, and troubleshoot when things fail. It matters now because cloud abstractions still rest on these fundamentals.
Infrastructure engineers build virtual machines, containers, and networks for application stacks, harden and patch Linux servers with configuration baselines, and automate routine provisioning with scripts and templates plus monitoring and troubleshooting. It solves repeatability, baseline security, and faster recovery from failures. It does not fix bad application code or unclear service ownership, and automation does not replace understanding how systems actually work.
By the end you will be able to build a virtual machine and container hosting stack on a configured network, a hardened Linux server baseline with patching and configuration controls, and an automated provisioning workflow from scripts and templates with monitoring checks.
Why this course exists
The gap is between following a setup tutorial once and keeping infrastructure provisioned, configured, and troubleshootable over time. This course teaches the arc from idea to provisioning to configuration to monitoring to troubleshooting to operation. You leave with foundations that support modern application delivery.

Speak the language first.
- Virtual machine
- A software-based computer that runs inside physical hardware and can host its own operating system and apps.
- Container
- A lightweight package that holds an app and its settings so it runs the same way on different machines.
- IP networking
- The system of addresses and rules that lets computers find each other and exchange data.
- Firewall
- A filter that allows safe network traffic and blocks unwanted connections to servers.
- Linux server hardening
- Turning off unneeded services, updating software, and tightening settings to make a server safer.
- Infrastructure as code
- Writing setup steps in templates or scripts so servers and networks can be built the same way every time.
- Monitoring and alerting
- Tracking server health and sending warnings when CPU, memory, disk, or services have problems.
- Backup and restore
- Saving copies of data and systems so they can be recovered after deletion, failure, or damage.
Fix, check, and go deeper.
Troubleshooting & common mistakes
Cannot connect over SSH
Check the server is running, confirm the IP and username, verify the firewall allows port 22, and check key file permissions.
Server disk full
Find large files and old logs, clear unneeded packages and temp files, then add disk space or log rotation.
Website unreachable but server is on
Check DNS settings, firewall rules, web service status, and listening ports with system logs.
High CPU or memory use
List top processes, restart or limit the heavy service, and resize the machine if use stays high.
Failed software updates
Check internet access and disk space, read the error message, fix broken packages, then rerun the update.
Before you move on, you should be able to
- Create a virtual machine and install Linux on it
- Set up SSH keys and basic firewall rules
- Use the command line to manage files, users, and services
- Write a simple script to automate server setup
- Configure monitoring checks and read system logs
- Practice restoring files from a backup
