Why this technology matters.
Microservices engineering is building independently deployable services with clear boundaries, versioned contracts, saga transactions, mesh routing, and observability. It matters now because growing teams need to ship parts of a system without breaking the whole.
It is used to split growing products into owned services and connect them resiliently, solving decomposition, compatibility, and multi-service workflows. It does not solve organizational or design problems alone: services do not fix tangled domains, contracts do not fix unowned dependencies, and a mesh does not fix missing error budgets or untested fallbacks.
By the end you will be able to build service boundaries from domain decomposition with ownership and coupling analysis, versioned API contracts with schema validation, compatibility, and documentation, and a saga-based multi-service workflow with compensation logic running over mesh-routed services with traffic policies, retries, and circuit breaking.
Why this course exists
The gap is between several small services that run in demos and a production microservice system with compatible contracts, compensated transactions, resilient communication, and observable deployments. The course teaches the arc from idea to design to code to test to deploy to operate, so students can decompose and run services independently.

- Capstone
Independently deployable mesh-routed services with resilient communication
Speak the language first.
- Domain decomposition
- Splitting a system into services around business capabilities so each team owns a clear area.
- Service ownership and coupling
- Assigning each service to one owner and reducing shared dependencies so services can change independently.
- Versioned API contracts
- Numbered interface definitions with schema checks so services evolve without silently breaking callers.
- Saga transactions
- Multi-service workflows where each step has a compensating action that undoes it if a later step fails.
- Compensation logic
- Rollback steps such as refunds or cancellations that restore consistency when a saga cannot complete.
- Service mesh routing
- A traffic layer between services that applies routing, retries, and policy without changing app code.
- Retries and circuit breaking
- Bounded re-attempts for failed calls plus breakers that stop calling an unhealthy service until it recovers.
- Service observability
- Logs, metrics, and traces correlated across services so a request can be followed end to end.
- Independent deployability
- Designing services so each can be released alone with compatible contracts and isolated data.
Fix, check, and go deeper.
Troubleshooting & common mistakes
Service change breaks downstream callers
Restore contract compatibility, add schema validation tests, and release the breaking change as a new version.
Saga leaves partial work after a mid-flow failure
Add missing compensation steps per completed action, then replay or roll back the failed workflow explicitly.
Retry storms overload a struggling service
Add bounded retries with backoff and a circuit breaker, then shed noncritical traffic until recovery.
Traffic shifts do not reach the intended version
Check mesh routing rules and version labels, then verify weights with canary metrics before widening rollout.
Failure cannot be traced across services
Propagate correlation IDs on every call and align log and trace fields so one request links across services.
