Introduction

Why this technology matters.

MCP engineering is the practice of building Model Context Protocol servers and clients so assistants can discover and use well-defined tools, resources, and prompts. It matters now because connecting models to real systems needs standard interfaces, not one-off integrations.

Engineering teams use MCP to expose APIs, data sources, and actions behind schemas with auth and clear error handling. It solves reusable tool exposure, capability discovery, and consistent invocation, but it does not fix poorly designed underlying APIs, missing permissions, or unsafe actions — a standard protocol cannot rescue a bad tool.

By the end you will be able to build an MCP server exposing tools, resources, and prompts, a capability manifest with JSON schemas and error responses, and an MCP client that discovers and invokes server actions in a deployed setup.

Why this course exists

The gap is between a hard-coded demo tool call and a production MCP interface with schemas, auth, versioning, and reliable deployment. This course teaches the arc from Model and Prompt through Context and Tools to Evaluation, Security, Infrastructure, and Production, so students can ship interoperable servers and clients.

Key concepts

Speak the language first.

Model Context Protocol
An open standard for connecting AI clients to servers that expose tools, data, and prompts.
MCP servers
Services that publish tools, resources, and prompts for AI clients to discover and call.
MCP clients
Applications that connect to MCP servers, list their capabilities, and invoke actions.
Tools
Callable functions a server exposes, such as looking up records or running calculations.
Resources
Data objects a server shares, such as files or records, that clients can read with context.
JSON schemas
Formal descriptions of inputs and outputs that validate calls between client and server.
Capability manifests
Declarations of what a server offers so clients know which actions are available.
MCP auth
Credential checks that control which clients and users may call server actions.
Error responses
Structured failure messages that tell the client what went wrong and how to retry.

Troubleshooting & common mistakes

Client cannot discover server tools

Verify the capability manifest is served correctly, check the server URL and version, and confirm the client lists capabilities after connect.

Tool calls fail schema validation

Compare the sent arguments against the JSON schema field by field, fix types or missing fields, and re-test with a minimal payload.

Auth rejects valid clients

Check token scope and expiry, confirm the server auth settings match the client credentials, and inspect auth logs.

Server returns vague errors

Standardize error responses with codes and messages, add request logging, and reproduce with a single isolated call.

Deployed server drops connections

Review hosting logs for restarts or timeouts, add health checks, and confirm the transport settings match the client.

Before you move on, you should be able to

  • Build MCP servers exposing tools, resources, and prompts
  • Design JSON schemas, capability manifests, and error responses
  • Develop MCP clients that discover and invoke server actions
  • Evaluate tool contracts for correctness and safety
  • Deploy MCP servers with auth and production practices
  • Explain how clients, servers, and schemas interact in MCP
  • Build auth checks into server tool handlers
